Charlize Theron: Salma Hayek Had a “Beautiful Wedding”

Charlize Theron tells Usmagazine.com that Salma Hayek had a “beautiful wedding” to French tycoon Francois-Henri Pinault Saturday in Venice, Italy.

“I’m really happy for them and they’re just a beautiful couple,” Theron told Us Monday at a Film Society of Lincoln Center event honoring Tom Hanks in NYC. “We’re really good friends, and it was really a celebration of love — that’s what it was really about.”

The bride, Theron added, looked “gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous.”

The sweetest moment?

“Everything,” said Theron, who attended the ceremony with her beau Stuart Townsend. “Everything was gorgeous.”

A-listers celebrate Hayek wedding

Rock star Bono and actresses Penelope Cruz and Charlize Theron were among the glitterati spotted at the La Fenice opera hall, as the couple repeated the vows they made in February.

Former French president Jacques Chirac, a Pinault family friend, was also among the guests, as were film director Emir Kusturica and fashion designer Stella McCartney.

Venice is where Mexican-born Hayek, 42, met Pinault, 46, who is chief executive of PPR, the luxury goods and retailing group controlled by his father Francois Pinault which notably includes the Gucci Group.

The couple – who had a daughter, Valentina Paloma Pinault, in 2007 in Los Angeles – married discretely in Paris on Saint Valentine’s Day.

Theron compares US marriage laws to apartheid

South African-born actress Charlize Theron calls US marriage laws “a form of apartheid”. The Oscar winner and Dior model said,

I don’t like living in an elitist world, it bothers me. I don’t want to be part of an elitist sexual preference. It bothers me. Maybe it’s because I come from a country where I lived under apartheid. This is a form of apartheid and I don’t want to be a part of that.

Theron was referring to the “Grand Apartheid” laws in her native country, which segregated whites and non-whites. The laws prevented non-whites from marrying whites or holding white jobs. Harsh criminal penalties were imposed on civil protestors of the apartheid laws, with thousands of people tortured, sentenced to death, or banished. The most famous face of apartheid is Nelson Mandela, who received a life sentence for treason but was finally freed in 1990, and went on to win a Nobel Peace Prize in 1993.

Theron has been dating super-hot boyfriend Stuart Townsend for years, and the couple have said in the past that they refused to get married until same-sex marriage was legal in the United States.

‘It’s not the reason I’m not getting married but it’s maybe a part of it,” Theron said. “My ability to get married is a piece of me that I wish I could give to somebody who it would mean so much to. We should all have the chance. It’s just so caveman, I can’t believe we’re still talking about it.’

Marie Claire UK

Marie Claire UK

Charlize is gracing next months cover of Marie Claire UK (click here to view scans). Here’s a little blurb of the article from the magazine:

Charlize Theron weighs in with her thoughts on love and motherhood in a new interview with Marie Claire magazine.

The Oscar winner says of her longterm relationship with actor Stuart Townsend, “I don’t feel like I’m in survival mode any more. I feel like it’s OK, I can breathe, so I’m very grateful to him.”

Charlize, 33, and Stuart have been together for 8 years but though she says she definitely wants kids, motherhood doesn’t seem to be on the immediate horizon for the Monster star.

“I’ve always known that I wanted to be a mom. I love children. I’ve always loved children,” she says. “But I’m not like, ‘Oh my god, I really must have kids right now.’ I’ve never felt this pressing urge that some biological clock is ticking. We both want to be parents one day, but I’ve no idea when that will be.”

Though she looks forward to motherhood, Charlize has admitted in the past that she’s not too keen on pregnancy: “Getting pregnant doesn’t excite me, but having kids does. I know I’ll be a mother one day. It’s just that I don’t really want to look like a whale. But I’m sure the idea of something growing inside you is pretty powerful.”

Theron up for Ayn Rand film

South African Oscar-winning actress Charlize Theron (Monster) is one of a number of stars interested in playing the lead role in the film adaptation of Atlas Shrugged, the best selling novel from the late novelist, screenwriter and philosophist, Ayn Rand (The Fountainhead).

According to The Hollywood Reporter, other actresses vying for the role are Angelina Jolie, Julia Roberts and Anne Hathaway.

Rand developed a philosophical system called objectivism, which is at the core of Atlas Shrugged. The book tells the story o a female railroad executive trying to keep her corporation competitive. It was published in 1957 but is regarded as particularly relevant today. Rand described objectivism as “a philosophy for living on earth”, grounded in reality and aimed at defining man’s nature and the nature of the world around him.
