Football isn’t high on the agenda for the average American, with the sport faring well below basketball, American football and baseball in the popularity stakes.

So what better way to give soccer a boost in the States with a host of A-list stars turning out to declare their love for the game.

Charlize Theron, Ashton Kutcher and Will Ferrell came out as unlikely Chelsea fans to cheer on the Blues at a pre-season friendly against Inter Milan in Los Angeles last night.

Also in attendance was Charmed actress Alyssa Milano – who has Italian roots – and Clockwork Orange actor Malcolm McDowell, who cheered on Inter Milan.

The game proved for an interesting night – which saw ex-Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho reunited with his former team while being in charge of Inter Milan.

Chelsea went on to beat Inter Milan 2-0, with Frank Lampard and Didier Drogba both scoring.

Oscar winner Charlize joined young Chelsea fans prior to kick-off to speak to the 81,224-strong crowd who had gathered at the Rose Bowl in the LA suburb of Pasadena.

Her Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Project has teamed up with the LAFC Chelsea (a youth football training programme) to set up community football programs for underprivileged children in her native South Africa.

Proceeds of last night’s game went towards the project, so Charlize told fans with where their money was going.

Wearing a sexy halterneck dress and gladiator sandals, the 33-year-old proudly held up a Chelsea shirt bearing her surname.

he said: ‘The World Cup is a huge, huge thing for South Africans and for Africa. The pride Africans have of hosting this is tremendous.

‘The question is, how do we generate that into other areas and have more of an impact?’

She was joined on the pitch by funnyman Will Ferrell, who publicly expressed his love for Chelsea when he wore a team shirt during an appearance on U.S. TV last year.
