Magnolia Home Entertainment announced that “The Burning Plain,” a film written and directed by Guillermo Arriaga and starring Academy Award-winners Charlize Theron and Kim Basinger, will hit the stores on Jan. 12.

“The performances by Theron and Basinger are strong enough to get noticed at Oscar time,” a critic for Time wrote. But they were overlooked by the Golden Globes.

Charlize Theron (“Hancock,” “Monster”) stars as Sylvia, a woman on the edge who takes an emotional journey back to the defining moment of her life. “The Burning Plain” explores the explosive power of forbidden love. Sylvia´s cool, professional demeanor masks her sexually charged storm within. When a stranger from Mexico confronts her mysterious past, Sylvia is launched into a journey through time that inextricably connects her to a variety of disparate characters, all of whom are grappling with their own romantic destinies.

Marking the directorial debut of Oscar-nominated screenwriter Guillermo Arriaga (“Babel,” “21 Grams”), “The Burning Plain” also features Basinger (“8 Mile,” “L.A. Confidential”), Emmy nominee John Corbett (“Sex and The City,” “My Big Fat Greek Wedding”) and Joaquim De Almeida (“Che: Part Two,” “24″).

“The Burning Plain” is rated R.
