Sleepwalking: An interview with Charlize Theron and Nick Stahl
Categories: Interviews and Sleepwalking

I, along with three other journalists, had the opportunity to interview actors Charlize Theron and Nick Stahl, who star in the upcoming overture film “Sleepwalking,” which Theron produced as well.

The interview took place at the St. Regis Hotel in San Francisco on March 3, 2008.

Academy Award winner Theron, who won in 2004 for Best Actress for her role as female serial killer Aileen Wuornos in “Monster,” has portrayed her talent in a wide variety of performances ranging from comedy to action to epic-drama.

Her movie credits also include: “The Devil’s Advocate,” “The Cider House Rules,” “Sweet November” and “The Italian Job.”

Her co-star Nick Stahl can be remembered from the HBO series “Carnivale” and his roles in “Sin City” and “Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines.”

Charlize Theron Talks Dirty About ‘Sleepwalking,’ ‘Hancock’ And How She Lost ‘Showgirls’
Categories: Interviews and Sleepwalking

Don’t be fooled by the serious subject matter of Charlize Theron’s latest flick, “Sleepwalking.” The statuesque star of “Monster” and “The Italian Job” likes to laugh, as you’ll see in the conversation below.

MTV News caught up with the Oscar winner while she was promoting the film in which she co-stars alongside Nick Stahl, AnnaSophia Robb and Dennis Hopper. Theron also produced the movie, a look at a trio of characters (Theron, Stahl and Robb) who must confront their lineage (in the form of a disturbing Hopper) and accept responsibility for the actions they take. (Here’s our review of “Sleepwalking” after its Sundance screening.)

Charlize Theron embraces the dark side of life
Categories: Interviews and Sleepwalking

Charlize Theron is a former model, dancer and, of course, Oscar winner. While she has appeared in some funny stuff - a recurring guest stint on television’s Arrested Development, as well as providing a voice in the cult hit Robot Chicken - she has increasingly been drawn to darker roles. She won her Oscar for Monster, after all, in which she played a serial killer. She both stars in and is a producer of Sleepwalking, opening Friday, in which she plays a troubled mother who abandons her 11-year-old daughter (AnnaSophia Robb), leaving her in the care of her struggling brother (Nick Stahl). Theron spoke recently about the film, her choices and her work.

Theron playing another monster

Charlize Theron was straightforward and somewhat philosophical about Hollywood after she accepted the Hasty Pudding’s Woman of the Year award last month.

“You can’t take this industry too seriously,” she said. “We want to believe we’re curing cancer, but we really aren’t.”

She’s like that. Direct. Theron, pronounced “Troon” with a rolled “r” in her native Afrikaans, is out publicizing her new movie, “Sleepwalking,” a grim indie about a wreck of a family that opens in some cities Friday. It is set to open in Tucson March 28.

The woman is a serious actor and a strong feminist, but you can’t reach any of that until you’ve confronted her implacable beauty. She’s an honest 5 feet 11 inches, and rather than wearing low pumps to minimize her height, she sports gray stiletto heels that match skin-tight gray pants and an elegant gray shawl.
Theron’s looks are never far from any discussion of her work. To some, she has willfully chosen parts that nullify her beauty. “So much has been made of the physical transformation in ‘Monster,’ ” she says about the 2003 movie that earned her a best-actress Oscar.

Opposites attract: ‘Sleepwalking’ stars Charlize Theron and Nick Stahl
Categories: News & Gossip and Sleepwalking

It is hard to imagine how Charlize Theron and Nick Stahl could be more different.

The stars of “Sleepwalking,” who play siblings carrying the wounds of an abusive childhood, are seated only a few feet from each other on a dark gray couch in the presidential suite of the St. Regis Hotel. They are on a promotional tour to discuss what it was about the film that brought together two such opposites.

Theron, 32, is a statuesque former model and dancer from South Africa who earned an Academy Award in 2003 for the film “Monster.” For the promotional stop, Theron traveled 22 hours from South Africa, where she was shooting a commercial, to be here. She’s outgoing and charming.

“Sleepwalking” provides a much needed awakening

It can be difficult to find a film that is both simple and complex. “Sleepwalking,” a recently released low-key picture, distinguishes itself as a unique piece of art that accomplishes just that.

The film begins with a single mother who just cannot keep herself out of trouble.

Joleen Reedy (Charlize Theron) is in dire need of a place to stay after her boyfriend is arrested.

Burdened by her 11-year-old daughter Tara (AnnaSophia Robb), Joleen turns to her younger brother James, played exceptionally well by Nick Stahl, for help.

Joleen is a restless woman, and finds no hope in her present situation, ultimately deciding to leave Tara with James and head back onto the road without mentioning her plan to either of them.

MediaBlvd Magazine’s interview with Charlize
Categories: Interviews and Sleepwalking

The Overture Films drama Sleepwalking is a moving story about the deep familial bond that develops between a 30-year-old man and his young niece, after the girl’s mother suddenly leaves town. Forced out of her home after her boyfriend is arrested, Joleen Reedy (Academy Award winner Charlize Theron) needs a place to stay with her 11-year-old daughter, Tara (AnnaSophia Robb). She turns to her younger brother James (Nick Stahl) for help, and he doesn’t hesitate to welcome them into his modest rental apartment. Almost as soon as she moves in, Joleen hits the road with another man, leaving James as the sole guardian of an adolescent girl. Before long, things spin out of control, and he loses his job, gets kicked out of his apartment and Tara is put into foster care. Deciding to take off with Tara and assume new identities as father and daughter, James faces his demons and, for the first time, finds a true purpose in life.

Also a producer on the film, Charlize Theron, along with her young co-star, AnnaSophia Robb, spoke to MediaBlvd Magazine about making an independent film with such a heavy, realistic subject matter.

Theron’s ‘passion project’

Charlize Theron was at the Smith Rafael Film Center on Sunday night to promote “Sleepwalking,” a low-budget independent movie she produced and in which stars.

“Sleepwalking” was shown for California Film Institute members, followed by a Q&A session with Theron and co-star Nick Stahl.

She made it clear that this is “a passion project” for her, so she has to be disappointed with the lousy reviews so far.

After its recent showing at Sundance, the MTV Movie Blog called it “the Super Bowl of good performance/bad movie movies.”

Charlize tackles another complex role in ‘Sleepwalking’

Don’t ever make any dumb blonde jokes about Charlize Theron. Not just because the tall, lanky and very buff South African actress could probably break you in half. Rather, because she’s an ever-inquisitive mover and shaker who’s constantly trying to learn everything she can about the ropes of her business. That and the fact that she’s a damn good actress.

For “Sleepwalking,” the new film in which she both acts and serves as a co-producer, those blonde locks have gone brown. She plays Joleen, a bad apple mom who one day hops in a truck and hits the road with yet another boyfriend, leaving her brother and her 11-year-old daughter behind.

It’s not the first time Theron has played an unpleasant character. Her first foray into film was as Helga, the ice-hearted girlfriend to James Spader’s ruthless hitman in “2 Days in the Valley.” A few years ago she nabbed a best actress Oscar for her gritty portrayal of real-life serial killer Aileen Wuornos in “Monster.”
