As Japanese basics purveyor Uniqlo has expanded into markets beyond Asia, it’s made a concerted effort to take things to a higher level, at least when it comes to design. The brand’s first big campaign here in the US included scenesters like Chloe Sevigny and Kim Gordon. Uniqlo quickly became the poor man’s APC, or the cool guy’s Gap, however you want to look at it.

But that was in 2007, before the recession hit. Now, being cool isn’t as important as being beloved by the masses. Uniqlo’s taking a cue from competitor Gap, releasing a “Made For All” campaign starring international celebrities Charlize Theron and Orlando Bloom.

The campaign makes sense. Uniqlo’s mission is to provide well-made, good-looking clothes to everyone. But are Charlize and Orlando the right ambassadors? We’re not so sure. When we think of innate style, they’re not the first celebs that come to our minds.

But they do have the global recognition Uniqlo is looking for, so until Maggie Gyllenhaal and Ryan Gosling become household names everywhere, we suppose we can’t complain.

Whatever It Takes (www.whateverittakes.org) is a charity artwork project that uses artwork donated from celebrities around the world to create ‘merchandise with meaning’ and has successfully launched mugs, plates and a range of bags amongst other things.

Whatever It Takes is a unique artwork campaign launched by 21st Century Leaders Foundation. The Whatever It Takes collection features ‘symbols of hope for the 21st Century’ drawn by leaders in the worlds of fashion, film, television, music and sport.

The signed artwork donated by each Leader (in this case Charlize) is his or her original work, and has been donated for the exclusive use of the Whatever It Takes campaign which has so far raised over $3,000,000 for charitable projects worldwide.

Whatever It Takes supports 21st Century Leaders Foundation in its work for key global development causes including poverty alleviation, environmental conservation and the protection of children.

Many of the world’s most celebrated public figures have put their names to the projects. By becoming 21st Century Leaders, these public figures are pledging to do ‘whatever it takes’ to address issues of the 21st Century.

Whatever It Takes works with our leaders to assist and encourage a generation of influencers to take ownership, engage in positive action, raise awareness among their communities, and champion the solutions to poverty and environmental degradation.

The team behind Juno is teaming up again to make a new film named Young Adult. Diablo Cody and Jason Reitman, the screenwriter and director of Juno, have teamed up with John Malkovich’s Mr Mudd production company for the film.

Oscar-winning actress Charlize Theron will be part of the cast, reports Deadline.

Young Adult’s storyline concerns a 30-something, divorced, young-adult fiction writer (Theron), who returns to her home city of Minneapolis to get in touch with an ex-boyfriend, who’s married with a child when she returns.

Filming will begin in New York in November.
