Charlize Theron based her “Snow White and the Huntsman” character on Jack Nicholson in “The Shining”

Charlize Theron, who is playing The Evil Queen in “Snow White and the Huntsman,” told LA Confidential that she found inspiration for the part from another sinister character – Jack Nicholson’s role in “The Shining.”

“There was definitely something [about the character] that always reminded me of Jack Nicholson in ‘The Shining,’” the Oscar winner told the magazine. “I played with the idea of that cabin fever, being stuck in a castle, and slowly losing your mind, your obsessions eating you up, and becoming capable of doing something you didn’t necessarily think you would be capable of.”

“Snow White and the Huntsman” is one of two Snow White films due out next year. “Huntsman,” which stars Kristin Stewart as its heroine, is said to be the darker of the two films.

“This has been a great sandbox to play in – huge sets and great costumes, and yet very grounded material,” Theron said in the interview.

The film will be released in theaters on June 1.

The other Snow White film, titled “Mirror Mirror,” stars Lily Collins as Snow White and Julia Roberts as the Evil Queen.

Charlize Theron Still Up For ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’

For a woman who’s been honored with nearly every important award that Hollywood has to offer, from an Academy Award to a Golden Globe, not to mention coveted titles like Esquire’s “Sexiest Woman Alive” and Spike’s “Decade of Hotness,” it seems like it’s been awhile since we’ve seen Charlize Theron in action.

Thankfully the nearly three-year wait for a Theron movie to hit theaters is almost over. Her latest flick is the buzzed-about Jason Reitman-directed, Diablo Cody-scripted comedy “Young Adult,” which gets a limited release next week; the highly anticipated “Snow White and the Huntsman” hits theaters next summer.

MTV News recently caught up with the down-to-earth Oscar winner as she did press for “Young Adult,” and we had to find out what the lovely leading lady has been up to the last few years.

“[I was] unemployed, I just couldn’t get a job,” Theron joked, adding that an average weekday for her involved several … suspicious activities.

“I cry and drink and shoot heroin. Is that not a typical Tuesday for you?” Theron asked MTV News’ Josh Horowitz with a smile. “Then I go to therapy and things turn out OK. No, I was getting ready to go and do a film in Australia and that just kept pushing and pushing,” she explained, referring to the problem-plagued “Mad Max: Fury Road.”

Theron said she “would love” to make “Fury Road” in spite of the delayed production. And while she’s slated to star opposite Tom Hardy in the film, the actress debunked a rumor that her character would be kicking butt with just one arm. “Who told you that?” she asked when we brought up the report. “Do you actually believe everything on the Interweb? Poor you,” she laughed.

It’s still unclear when or if George Miller’s long-delayed resurrection of the “Mad Max” franchise will start production again, but fans can be hopeful. After all, Miller recently revealed his plans for not one, but three feature films.

“We started with ['Fury Road'], but we then started to do a second story and a third,” he said. “We’ve written the script for the second and almost finished the third. We never intended to — they were part of the exploration of the characters.”

Charlize Theron feels the actress love

IFP’s Gotham Independent Films Awards went off Monday in Manhattan with nary a “Dark Knight” rising — though the event counted one evil queen in Charlize Theron.

The South African blond was on hand to accept a career achievement award on a night that saw honors for Brad Pitt’s “Tree of Life,” “Beginners” and actress Felicity Jones.

The once-bullied Theron looked chic in a black-and-white frock, flanked by her “Young Adult” director Jason Reitman, costar Patton Oswalt and gorgeous mom Gerda. Though the award was for Charlize exclusively, backstage she opened up about supporting other actresses.

Theron admitted that she was busy filming “Snow White and the Huntsman,” but said she needed to catch up on some award-season films featuring her female peers.

“Of course, this idea that we’re not supportive of each other is just total [bull],” she told THR.

Departing the Euphoria Calvin Klein lounge, Theron headed back to her table where she enjoyed her whole meal (including the bread and fondue, a Ministry onlooker said) and mingling with the likes of Zachary Quinto, Penn Badgley, Judy Greer and hostess Edie Falco.

While “Martha Marcy May Marlene” star Lizzie Olsen lost the breakout award to Jones for “Like Crazy,” she said she was grateful to be invited. And though she’s more than made her mark with performances this year, some folks still mistake her for sisters Mary-Kate and Ashley.

“I’m 50/50,” she admitted to some admirers, saying she had physical traits of both her siblings.

She won’t stay single for long! Charlize Theron stands out from the crowd in a very short LBD

She very rarely makes a fashion faux pas and last night Charlize Theron got it right again.

The South African born star stole the show at the New York City screening of her new film Young Adult.

The 36-year-old actress wore a very short but classic little black dress designed by Dior and kept her simple and slicked to the side.

She accessorised with Fred Leighton jewellery and a gold clutch bag and a wore nude heels that extenuated her long legs.

The event, which was held at the Tribeca Grand Screening Room, was hosted by the Cinema Society and Dior Beauty.

Newly-single Charlize won’t have a hard time finding a new guy if she continues to look this good.
The South African star is embracing her single status, admitting that it’s the first time she has been unattached since she was 19.

In an interview in the December issue of US Vogue magazine she said: ‘This is the first time in my life. From the time I was nineteen, I’ve been in relationships, literally gone from one to the other within a month.’

The 36-year-old dated actor Stuart Townsend for almost 10 years before they split in 2010.

She says she pulled back on her career in a bid to try and save their union when the relationship began to go downhill.

Charlize was joined at the screening by her co-stars Elizabeth Reaser and Patton Oswalt.

Young Adult see Oscar winner Theron play Mavis Gary, a teen literature writer who returns to her home in small-town Minnesota looking to rekindle a romance with her ex-boyfriend, who is now married with kids.

Charlize Theron: Breaking Away

December Vogue issue December Vogue issue December Vogue issue

After a hiatus from leading roles, Charlize Theron returns full-on with this month’s Young Adult, a film that showcases her Oscar-worthy talents—and the liberating energy of her newly single life.

“We should keep it classy,” Charlize Theron says.

It’s a warm autumn evening in Los Angeles, and I’m sitting with Theron at a near-empty Japanese restaurant. Up the road, Barack Obama is wooing the beautiful and boldfaced at a $17,900-a-plate fund-raiser, and for hours, the Hollywood sky has rattled with helicopters. But this feels like a much better place to be, across a small table from the 36-year-old native South African and Oscar winner who director Jason Reitman (Up in the Air, Juno) says is “in every conversation about the greatest living actresses.” There’s also sake, poured in wooden boxes filled to the brim, so that one has no choice but to lean over, inelegantly dip one’s nose, and slurp it like a Labrador retriever. Which now I do.

Theron laughs loudly. “That’s why I ordered it,” she says. “To make you do that.”

I’d been warned about Theron. Good warnings. She is an actress who doesn’t take herself seriously, who loathes phoniness, who chooses not to live in a gilded fantasy of air kisses and fake compliments, and is not afraid of an adult beverage, a pointed jab, or a scattering of F-bombs.

Charlize Theron: Kristen Stewart doesn’t give a [bleep]

At 36, Charlize Theron is just now finding out what it feels like to fly solo as an adult. The Oscar-winning actress tells the December issue of Vogue that she’s been romantically attached for the past 17 years.

“I’ve never been single,” she tells the magazine. “This is the first time in my life. From the time I was 19, I’ve been in relationships, literally gone from one to the other within a month.”

Being single has been good to her though, she says, as she’s been able to “rediscover” herself.

“I had to make a real conscious effort to do it—it’s hard. It’s much easier to lose yourself in flowers and cigarettes and coffee with somebody else,” she says.

Part of that rediscovery is reacquainting herself with both the indie side of cinema, with her starring turn in December’s Jason Reitman/Diablo Cody film “Young Adult,” as well as in Rupert Sanders’ “Snow White and the Huntsman,” due out next summer.

Theron plays the evil queen to Kristen Stewart’s portrayal of the fair princess, and she jokes with Vogue that she’s “looking forward to killing her and stealing her beauty.”

But in all seriousness, the actress was taken aback by all that the “Twilight” star faces at such a young age.

“She just turned 21. She’s a child. When I think about myself at 21….I couldn’t comprehend it,” she says. “And Kristen is just living this to the max and still has a sense of humor about it. There’s this really lovely quality about her that just doesn’t give a f-–. A lot of people say they don’t, but then they go home and cry and pop a Xanax. Kristen actually doesn’t give a f–. That’s what’s so refreshing about her.”
